Look back at your diary over the last 3 months. As much as possible there is enormous benefit to be had in planning to deliver sustained performance as opposed to consistently trying to manage reactive performance.

We know that the reality of business life is that it’s often not as easy to be as single minded as the elite athlete in deciding how every second is allocated – however, the principle holds true. Diary entries characterised by an external locus of control generates a sense of passiveness, helplessness, uncertainty and stress – hardly high performing ingredients. You’re more confident because you know you’re investing your energy into all the right activities and you’re more in control because you’re not waiting for events to determine your working focus.Ĭontrast this much more proactive approach with the reactive, externally driven and activity focused (rather than output focused) diaries we see in so many business performers. This approach helps them be much better at being selectively REACTIVE when they have to deal with the unexpected events that inevitably occur. Take a look at your diary entries over the next month – how much time are you planning to spend doing things where you have high degrees of control compared to others where control is low or absent? What’s your proactive/reactive balance like? With a healthy balance between proactive and reactive working, it’s a lot easier to get the key factors of confidence and control working for you. They are primarily PROACTIVE, determining well in advance what their working day will look like. That’s what occupies the mind before the diary is opened – athletes and coaches ask themselves the question “what do we need to be doing over the next days/weeks/months that will build our foundation for performance?” It’s not a question of luck, favourable conditions, or external events – more a function of focusing effort, emotion and resource on those things largely or totally under the performer’s control. When it comes to their diary, the mindset chosen by elite athletes is driven by recognition that performance is a choice.

Our experience, evidenced by multiple team medals at International, World and Olympic level, is that the approach to planning taken by elite athletes is far more effective in delivering predictable performance than that followed by the majority in business. At this moment in time, I realized what I’d been missing out by writing off festivals as a whole.Īnd while I’m not sure my self-realization will amount to anything other than an epiphany, I know that I’ll be more open to attending festivals like this in the future. The mindset adopted and habits practised in the face of that arena often differ markedly, not least in the approach taken to planning individual and collective performance. This is so cool.Įven though you’re supposed to toss the chalk on the hour, there were often more “unofficial” times where everyone would toss the chalk: during performances, small groups having “battles” between themselves and other groups, or the occasional child who was super excited to be handed a bag of colorful chalk and little restrictions.Īshley and I spent some time at the top of the hill between the Krishna Temple and the main stage, just watching the merriment all around. It became hard to breathe, you couldn’t see, you’re bumping into everyone around you, elbows and arms flailing about as they toss the chalk over your head. …for a few seconds until it all mashes together into a big, brownish cloud. “Toss the chalk” became the cry around me, as colorful chalk was tossed into the air, at people walking by, and at my friend.Įvery hour on the hour, festival-goers toss the chalk into the air, creating a beautiful rainbow cloud…

The atmosphere around the festival was electric, full of love, and harmony. However after attending the Festival of Colors as part of Holi, I think my mind is starting to change.

I hear of people attending Burning Man, Tomorrowland, Glastonbury, and other celebrations around the world, and I think, “Good for them.” I’ll peruse through their blog posts, articles, and pictures online, smiling and appreciating the diversity in the world…and then move on and away. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a huge festival-goer.
